My Challenge – A New Chapter

Some of you may know that from tomorrow, I’ll be Acting Headteacher at Heathfield Primary School. The scariest thing at the minute is not knowing what I don’t know. My priority for the next few days is making sure that Heathfield is ready. We have had MAJOR works in school during the break and most of the school is still in a mess. Experience tells me that this will not be a problem – things always come together!

My challenge set by the Governors is to not just settle the ship, but move the school forward in what could be only 4 months as Acting Head. We will be continuing our blogging projects for each class, introduce Assertive Mentoring and ensuring that progress of each child in each class is the most important factor on a daily basis, in fact lesson by lesson. We will make Assertive Mentoring catch any pupil who may be making less progress than desired quickly and our intervention will make a difference and help close the gap for this pupil.

Our pupils are excited! They are excited because we have hard working staff and we make very good use of technology in particular blogging to engage our pupils. You will see how our blogs develop over the coming week and months. One very challenging task I have set for myself is as Headteacher, I’m going to blog EVERY single pupil that comes to me with good news. This blog will be maintained by John Mclear’s Classdroid Android App which allows an Android phone to directly load pictures to a blog in just 5 simple clicks on the device and grade them too.

Best of luck!! I am sure you will be fab! Assertive mentoring is fantastic; having seen the marvellous impact (during my first term as DHT)it has on engaging and motivating pupils to become even more responsible for their learning as a result of the AM ‘tool’s,’ whilst also providing postive feedback and ‘steps to success’ I can throughly recommend it! I can’t wait to hear the ways in which you implement and use Assertive mentoring at Heathfield Primary……. so I can hopefully ‘borrow’ even more words of wisdom and ideas! 🙂 Enjoy being captain of the ship. I am sure you will ‘steer’ her well.

What a lovely comment! It’s great to hear 1st hand the impact AM has had on your pupils. I can only hope we can do something similar at Heathfield. I know who to ask now when I have questions!! 😉

The “Well Done Blog” is a wonderful idea. The challenge of moving the school forward in only 4 months seems achievable judging by what I know of you, your ability to motivate children and teachers, and your skill with technology. Good luck? No, there’s no need. It’s your skill taht’ll drive the school forward.

Thanks Ross! This time of year when you’ve been off for so long doesn’t do the confidence any good but I know the school well and think I can do a good job over the 4 months. I hope the new well done blog will help pupils get motivated to please their teachers and the parents through performing to the best of their abilities and as a result, being highlighted on the new blog. Thanks for your support!

Just saw this post. Best of luck. If you can inspire the people in the school the way you have inspired educators globally, your contribution will be amazing.

You are such an inspiration. I’ve just started my blog and will be ‘unleashing’ it next week LIVE!!! I’m so excited- I hope my Year 2’s will be too. PS We have just entered our second year of assertive mentoring. WOW – what a hit with bth staff and children. They love it. My children can’t wait to have their mentoring meeting with me in November. All the best to you in your role.
